The Strength and Relaxation of Yoga

There are many different types of yoga that people can participate in on various levels, including Bikram yoga, which is done in an extremely hot room at all times. Yoga has many different benefits to it and can be done by beginners to experts alike, even in some of the same classes, since poses can be taken to more difficult levels and held for differing lengths of time providing more advanced students with more of a workout than the novice students.

Benefits

Yoga is a great physical fitness program for any person, regardless of age, body type or physical fitness level. Not only does it provide cardio vascular work since the movements are fluid, transitioning constantly from one pose to the next without a break, but it is also strengthening since poses are held by different muscles in the body, all of which use the body's weight to supply the resistance in each pose. Flexibility is also enhanced through the different poses since most involve some sort of twisting, balancing, bending, flexing or other motion that helps to lengthen and strengthen the muscles all at the same time.

Yoga is also beneficial in teaching relaxation techniques and soothing stress. Like other physical activity, yoga releases endorphins which automatically make a person feel better for having participated in it. In addition, yoga incorporates strict breathing techniques along with the various poses which help the individual to focus purely on their body and breathing, forcing them to let go of any other problems or stress that they may have encountered outside of the yoga class. These breathing techniques not only calm stress but also lower blood pressure and paired with the stretching in the poses, helps to increase blood flow to muscles in dire need of it.

There are different types of yoga, some of which focus more on the meditation aspects of the practice rather than the physical benefits. There are also some types of power yoga classes that increase the physical stamina of those who participate in it and are totally worn out by the end of the class. Regardless the type of yoga, there are many benefits for those who participate, such as muscle tone and strength, improved health of the spine, body awareness, increased energy and improved balance. In addition, yoga requires very little in the way of equipment, as even the yoga mats can be found at the classes for free, and if not, can be found for as little as fifteen dollars. Otherwise, loose fitting clothes that are comfortable to stretch and bend in are all that is required.
